1. 3 steps: discover-understand-remember. Read the book 3 times, each time with different target.
Read for a purpose, and must set a time limit. Dont read for 3 consecutive 3 hours but three 1-hour section. Be mindful of where the "weight" of the book is. Try to know the intellectual context. A book is usually a response to some other author.
Reading is a creative process, not like watching TV. Work your mind as you read. Question, rehearse, discuss as you read. Use different modes, this will develop your mind fully.
I am no longer a bookworm. I read for a purpose. Make it count. This is all the more important as time for reading get a smaller and smaller proportion in my time resource.
2. More importantly, I am struck how I have been ignoring some basic, immediate techniques that if be mastered can fundamentally lift up my productivity.
How unconscious of time I am! I read as if there's nothing I gonna have to do!
Not only reading. There are techniques of thinking, solving, questioning, writing, arguing,...that are so basic that must be mastered before you hope to do anything bigger than mediorce...
